Cheers for One Year!

Charlottesville Refill

Established in August 2021, in just one year, our amazing community has diverted over 7,000 containers from the landfill just by refilling containers with us! We have supported other local businesses by stocking 20% of our vendors from Virginia and are proud to say that over 40% of our manufacturers are woman-owned businesses! It is exciting to see what we accomplished in such a short amount of time and can't wait to see what the next year(s) bring!

Charlottesville Bulk Refill

What's in a name?

A refillery is a storefront that offers bulk products ranging from home cleaners to personal care. Customers bring in their reused / repurposed containers or purchase new ones to use indefinitely! The containers will be weighed before and after you add your refillables, so you only pay for what you need!

Dogwood Refillery's mission extends beyond just low-waste, but being conscious in every aspect of life to be sustainable. This includes supporting native plants. Dogwood's are not only native to Virginia, but are also the official state tree and state flower!

Dogwood Refillery will enable the transition from a linear economy, which promotes waste, to a circular economy. Currently less than 6% of plastic is actually recycled, at Dogwood Refillery, you will be able to reduce, reuse and REFILL!

Refill Charlottesville

Who is Alex?

I am the owner of Dogwood Refillery and have a passion for sustainability. I am not an expert nor am I perfect, but I love to learn. I moved to Charlottesville in 2015 to work for a company that shared my values, Apex Clean Energy our local wind and solar farm developer. During this time I was subtly influenced by my co-workers and the CVille community, making the shift to live a more sustainable life. Thanks to them, I learned about the impact my choices were having, most of which I didn't even realize!

I now eat less meat, compost, am part of a local CSA and prioritize shopping local. But I knew I wanted to do more and pivot my career to help others as CVille has helped me. So I became a Hoo and received a Sustainable Business Certificate from UVA. As I continued to learn more about the impact of plastics, I became frustrated that I was unable to recommend quality and local low-waste solutions... so here we are!

No matter where you are on your sustainability journey, I am excited to be a part of it. I firmly believe that not everyone's eco-friendly life looks the same and that even one small change adds up to a bigger impact over time.
